ÍTF oversees the Besta deild karla and represents the country’s leading clubs. In recent years, it has driven significant improvements in league governance, professional standards and long-term development structures. Iceland’s top division is recognised for its strong identity, competitive balance and its producing well-trained players in an ambitious football environment.

The league has also strengthened its operational and commercial foundations, with clubs investing in improved facilities, youth academies and digital engagement. These efforts aim to broaden the league’s reach, reinforce its sustainability and improve Icelandic football competitiveness.

WLA membership will allow ÍTF to participate fully in the association’s collective work on competition organisation, commercial growth, integrity issues and strategic planning, while sharing its own experience of developing a modern league in a unique sporting landscape.

The membership was formalised by Richard Masters, Chair of the World Leagues Association, and Birgir Johannsson, Chair of Íslenskur Toppfótbolti, during the WLA Annual Meeting held in Athens on 14 November 2025.

Birgir Jóhannsson, CEO of Íslenskur Toppfótbolti, said:
“ÍTF is committed to further strengthening the top tier of Icelandic football. Joining the WLA gives us an important platform to exchange ideas, learn from leading leagues and deepen cooperation with organisations facing similar challenges and ambitions. We look forward to engaging with our peers worldwide.”

Richard Masters, Chair of the World Leagues Association, said:
“We are pleased to welcome Íslenskur Toppfótbolti to the WLA. The league has made significant progress in recent years, and we look forward to working with ÍTF as it continues to build a strong and sustainable future for Icelandic football.”
